"You gotta work hard if you want to win"
awww eff that!! that shit ain't always true most of the time.
it's been a bad day...and reading Janine's blog don't make me feel so good about some people
I mean damn, some people's priviledge gives their vantage point a 00/00 vision. The shit is ridiculous.
AAAAAAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ok, i had to get that outta my system so what up??
Oooh the roots r coming back....ooohhh and they bringin a lil lupe haha!
i can risk my hearing for one more nite!
Hope ya'll had a very merry christmas. I spent majority of the weekend sick as a dog eating taco bell's green onions lol. but it was cool. I had to drug myself up to see Dreamgirls...which i must say is the most phenominal movie this year...well a close tie with The Departed...but you get what i'm saying. J. Hudson ROCKED da MIC...ya heards me!
After enjoying a weekend a home it was time to get back to the city. Instead of driving, I ended up with THE WORST scheduled flights to and from new orleans. For all ya'll who don't know, Houston is too damn big to be talking bout "yeah, I'm 10 min away"...no u not. ain't nothing 10 min away in houston. So needless to say, leaving the house at 5:10 am was not gonna guarentee time to check in baggage and make my 6:30am flight out to n.o. Soooo....my luggage is supposedly on it's way via some three letter parcel service. lol
Oooohhh thanks cuzins for the ipod speaker/radio...dat bass be bumping lol. Time to teach the neighbors a lesson lol.
got sum work ta do

waiting
waiting. to see what the city's gonna do. the city's still waiting.

I love you in a place where there's no space or time
I love you for in my life you are a friend of mine
And when my life is over
Remember when we were together
We were alone and I was singing this song for you
©Donny Hathaway
Now that's love
Birds of a feather flock together
But chickens don’t fly
They eat they own sh*t and die
Don’t be affiliated

oooh now that's love 2. lol

"...now they call me crazy Joe"
Can I get an updated version of Lean on Me...I know it exists

let's see...
there's Mrs. Ina Gex Who saw potential in the midst of everything. Rest in peace.
Ms. Stephens who started the spark in History
Coach Green who challenged me to think
Ms. Dennis who gave the time to nurture my spirit
Mr. Richard who taught me the meaning of "oh what tangled webs we've weaved. When first we practice to deceive" well not really. after the school year he joined the clergy...lol but u know what i mean
Ooh Ms. Cassimere who taught me discipline...she had my ass in lunch detention almost everyday lol
haha Mr. Stewart. i still don't know where that accent came from
so yeah, I had a couple of Michelle Pfeiffer and Hilary swanks through out my days...but oh, if it wasn’t for Mr. and Mrs. Joe Clark.
Thanks

oh, she really does. gosh that movie was dope. I know I'm later than a pregant woman but...so.
How far are you willing to go for that thing?
Eh? I'm not as willing to sacrifice friends and family as I would've for my own childish ambitions as I once used to be, but what's in my way now? at what cost do I stop identifying things as pawns and see them as people...or vice versa.
I hope I still don't have the "eff em" attitude in me. That ish can really bite u in da ass...I have the scars to prove it. But at the same time those scars were healing I was learning.
Now again...How much am I willing to sacrice to acheive my goals...ask me again tomorrow.
Let's see...
I did some traveling this year, but nothing outta da U.S. Let's see what this summer has in store for me...Italy or England is on my list:::crosses fingers and says a quick prayer:::

I started going though some pics I took this year...I can't believe it's almost over.
New Year's Resolutions?

New Years...I've blurred the faces to protect the guity...oh, i mean da innocent

"I don't know much about cards, but I bet these 4 5s beat a full house" (c) Omar
Ah ha! i found a cheap flight to houston for christmas. I never thought I would get tired of driving to houston, but the blowout experience isn't a good look. Plus, i still didn't get my extra tire fixed yet...I'ma get to it.
For those keeping count: I DON'T NEED ANY SEASONS OF THE WIRE. I HAVE ALL 3!
I want a dog, but I need a yard to make the experience a success:::insert sad face::::
I've been complaining a lot lately. It's not you it's really me. Things aren't the way i want them to be. I let people get under my skin (which isn't as thick as i advertise). I need a change...QUICK!
I gotta start reading my Bible again...Daily. I stopped about a month ago. I'm not trynna say my reading the Bible is the cure to solve all bad attitude ailments...but it sure does help give me focus.
dang, it's almost 1am and I'm still up!?!?!?!?!?!?! ha i took a nap earlier...so i cheated???? Actually, i thought i was in for the night until i realized i forgot to turn my phone on silent and was awakened by some randomass number. I didn't answer. They didn't leave a msg. I guess it wasn't important.
Wendy Williams was on the tv when i was rudely awakened. I have come to this conclusion...u ready. YEah, so I don't like carmen bryan. It's not even on some black feminist, support vixens, equal rights for sexing type stuff. She's a stupid girl. She says stupid things. She has NO personality. I just don't like her. Now is she going to lose sleep over this?
Probably not.
eh.
well, it's been on in demand for the past week so I feel I'm not spoiling anything...so....
R.I.P.
damn HBO. the new season isn't suppose to air until 2008!?!?!?!?!?!??!?!? ya'll straight trippin. and don't think i forgot how upset i was at last season's finale for the sopranos. Calm before the storm my arse!
i'm out!

Keys open Doors
Today someone asked me why I identified myself as Black and not as an African American...well, cause she's an African American and I don't think we look anything alike (though I wish our bank accounts were somehow related)
no disrespect and all, just keepin it real

saving a egg....LMAO!!!!
Damn, can I please sleep past 8:00 am on a Sunday morning...specially since church doesn’t begin til 1pm.
I'm up now, so I guess not huh?
Why every time I go out I feel the need to blog about the weird ish that happens but I can't ever remember what it was?
Oh, for one. On the real. Why does Congressman William Jefferson always pass by the Hookah Cafe every time I'm there? It was real weird cause I went with my girl and we sat at the bar cause they had seats available (oh, and what the hell? do you have to get there at 4pm on Friday to get a table. when we went the girl asked us if we wanted to put our name on the waiting list, saying the wait would be 30 minutes or so. I guess "or so" translates to a little over 3 hours). So we all know sitting at the bar ain't the best place to be if you trying to lay off the fish mentality huh? So let’s just say a couple cuba libres later here comes Bill. He walks past us and my friend's like "why does he come every time we're here?" Idunno :::half inebriatedly (I know this not a word but…eh) shrugs shoulders::: oh shall i mention my hearing is severely affected when consuming alcohol. In other words, I can't hear ish...don't be mad when I'm all "que??" i bees serious!
So on his way out Bill recognizes my friend and gives her a hug, and then he turns to me and does the same. Then I ask him, "Why is it that every time I'm here, you're here" Refer to the previous section to see why my response was a shake of the head and a smile. yeah, okay. I feel like I'ma see Karen Carter in Dreams or at poetry next week. ha. I wouldn't be surprised.
I like dudes with a lil hood in them. They seem to give the damnest compliments. Last week it was "Damn, I like dem jeans"...I did too! 7 jeans on sale are always the ish!!!! and I love the way they fit! This week, dudes was really feeling the hair, and letting me know?.? Idunno what's going on, but I'm much obliged, as Bubbles would say.
Oh yeah, so I stay in Greater New Orleans, and there's no reason why I should be seeing raccoons, right? Yeah, so last night I thought I was tripping. My girl was dropping me off at home and we thought we saw a thunder cat run across the street and it jumped like to the middle of the phone pole. She just stopped the car. It WAS a friggin raccoon, or a cat that had two black eyes.
man idunno.
oh, watch the wire tonight!

a bad note, ain't no bad note, if it's a good note
The blogger "MAN" keeps trynna make me switch to beta blogger...change...eh. maybe for the new year.
So hurricane season is officially over!!!! and the temp. dropped bout 30 degrees over 3 hours last night. It's New Orleans cold outside brrrrrrrrr. I ain't goin nowhere this weekend...well to church. but i'm chillin. cleaning the crib. finishing my schedule. blog a lil. catch up with some peeps on my lil space and read a book...well at least start on one. the ratio of how many books i buy to the ones i actually read and finish are disappointing at the very least.
I done effed up and saw the finale for the wire. i won't ruin it for ya'll, but in two weeks let's have a convo. okay?!!?!
so what's really going on?
WORLD AIDS Day. As Bush highly promotes abstanance in 3rd world countries where people live on less than a dollar a day, Peter Piot sums it up for me "Twenty-five years into AIDS, nations rich and poor still think about the pandemic from an emergency perspective of quick fixes and short-term goals"
Apologies are having the Best Week Ever
I think Ima enroll in a pottery class...oh no, no link for this. I'm serious.

Oh yeah, this one girl fainted. I hope she's alrite, they were between sets at the time. You know we were all plottin to faint once john legend came on so that we could've been rushed backstage only to be greeted by johnny once his set was over...what???

Oh, go see Deja Vu. dope. saw it last week but forgot to blog about it
Paula Patton reminds me of Halle Berry in some scenes from the movie.
Nelly furtado reminds me of Madonna, idunno why. but I'm watchin the american music awards and she just does
I thought this was the best source of KKKramer news
damn, and i was such a Seinfeld show fan. I was flippin channels last night and I saw Seinfeld was on Davie Letterman so I tuned in only to see KKKramer there via satellite. He caught me off guard by saying "I'm not a racist, yet I found myself saying racist remarks" This is where I insert the spade calling quote.
Why is this always the first thing people who use or are about to use racist remarks say "I'm not a racist but..." But nothing.
That's the same foolishness we all say "I'm not trying to be messy but..." That's B.S. Yes you are the biggest ____________ that you are claiming not to be.
that's all ima say bout that
I could sure go for some homemade gumbo right about now. Let's play "who's moved back to new orleans and has a fully working kitchen" damn. some of ya'll don't know the half. It's during the holidays that I fully notice the long lasting effects of Katrina. Of course I pass devastated areas EVERYday, neighborhoods without electricity, more than half of the schools in Orleans parish failing to reopen, sky high rent, electricity bills, price gouging at its best in the grocery store, fights with the insurance company, nails in my tires from the construction or lack of within the entire city (and let me remind u how expensive suv tires are...i'm ride dem thangs til the wheels fall off), sky high non moving vehicle violation fees, later hours of parking meters so that they can give you a ticket resulting in you having to pay the previous mentioned ticket fees.
but i miss my family being five minutes away, instead of the 5 hr ride to houston, i miss my family being in a comfortable house, instead of cramped up in a small apt or a fema trailer, I miss the smell of gumbo, stuffed bell peppers, shrimp and crabmeat dressing, sweet potato pies, pecan pies, red beans on Monday, greens on Wednesday, catfish on Fridays with a lil potato salad on the side. I just miss the lil things u know
"Gravity is working against me
And gravity wants to bring me down
Oh I'll never know what makes this man
With all the love that his heart can stand
Dream of ways to throw it all away"

I always listen to this
"Are we gonna let de-elevator
Bring us down
Oh, no Let's Go!"

"everything that happens
happens for a reason
and one man's forever
might be God's season"
(c) Common
I've probably quoted this at least 3 times in my blog alone, but, how do you know when the season has past? God's will is a strange thing. Not strange in weird or abnormal but strange in the way that it will be what it is, but it's on us to accept it.
I've been dealing with some issues of "am i staying in this one place to long" It was decent when it started and I've reaped tremendous benefits from it, but I think it's time. But here's where God's will comes in. Release from one situation to another won't always be mutually agreed upon. Trust. Sometimes you do have to go through that valley to get to the other side.
I guess I just need to reassure myself that it's gonna be alright.
I just get disappointed in how low people actually stoop for self gratification, and the means in which they justify their actions.
To you I say, "Dig a hole, go head & bury yourself!"
i mean that.
i still got some growing to do. i didn't say i was perfect!

a friday nite and i'm...bloggin??? whatupwitdat???
So after remembering I forgot to pay my car note online I left work and headed to Kinko’s to get a job done. When I finished there I strolled over to Blockbuster to view the selection. I rented MI3 and Thank You for Not Smoking. I then headed a few steps over to Stein Mart to see about exploiting my feet in some bronze pumps. I actually found 3 pairs of shoes, all for under $100!!!!!!!!
So let me formally introduce you to my new favorite pair of shoes:

Beauts.
So, I'm on cloud 9.5 walking back to my car when I notice the big ass flyer on my windshield. As I approach my car I notice that my front bumper is all scratched up...Oh, Hell ta da no!!!!
To make a long story short, the guy wants to settle w/out insurance companies involved. Cool son, but Ima need you to mosey on back in Kinko’s and make me copies of two sets of identification, and hold on...let me call this phone just to make sure this is your number...oh it is...cool. Now, I'm not upset. No use in crying over some lactose that has hit the floor, but Ima tell u what ima do:
Ima go home, cause it's been a hell of a week and my boss has already assumed I was putting in a couple of hours this weekend.
Take a nice hot shower.
Pay my car note and sign up for automatic bill pay.
Watch an episode or two of The Office
Try on my new shoes
Eat a chocolate puddin cup
tivo the best week ever
read the remaining pages of my book
get a lil shut eye
find two places around the city that will give me some estimates
and call you with my decision
Peace.

Hurt me soul (c) Lupe
"Somehow my light ya'll became my rain" (c) Common
I've been in this place too long.
I have to switch up my wardrobe, for my season is about to change.
So we got a little cool front in the area; I wonder how long this will last. Feels good though. I even took one of my scarves out of retirement. :-p (I learned this today)
OMG, oh sorry, I thought I wasn't tivo'n The Office
I over read someone’s blog discussing the ways in which we sell ourselves. It went on saying; the only reason we enroll in college, and put ourselves through unnecessary scrutiny and drama is to have an end result of more cash in da bank.
I chuckled cause I think she's young, and finds ways to justify why she's got undeniable talent and smarts but is now 19, married and pregnant. She's awesome but doesn't know her capabilities. Doesn't know that the world still rests in the palm of her hand that she's stuck in her back pocket.
Yeah, some people do equate success with wealth and hey, who doesn't want a nice salary to compensate for the hard work you've put in school over the years? And yeah, I do agree that you are selling yourself in interviews, internships, etc. but, is that where the buck stops? No, it isn't as simple as the cash transaction would like to believe...and trust, if it was about the money, I would've steered clear and far from a degree in the Liberal Arts field. No need to get on the nerd track but, school is fulfilling to me as a person. It enables me to grasp and understand theories, techniques, methods, and the history to understand the world around me. A degree in this field helps me to enable those around me...if I allow it. As we all know Cash Rules Everything Around Me, get the CREAM (c) Wu. Nothing's free, so in that mind, I have to pay to get ahead, but once I'm up there, what can I do to level the playing field for others? What are you doing? And again, what is your definition of success?
and i'm out.
i gotta book to finish and an office to watch.

my pequeno post
Omg, fall weather is taking a hiatus from New Orleans.
I know, I know. So here's what I've been up to lately:
I got into grad school!!!!! I wish I could insert that Vonage jingle that was in Kill Bill I...let me see if I can find it...I could only find it on youtube and I thought they were pretty lame.
I hate everything apple except for the ipod...oh, and itunes. What in the hell is the deal with no right and left click buttons? I feel like this should be on an episode of Seinfeld. Today’s score:
Apple - 0, PC -1
Oh, and is The Office, not one of the funniest shows on television? I've been having Dwight call all of my friends. lol, this dude is hilarious!!!!!
I've been called to finish something I've started...I got cha

lovesmile
Somedays I find it difficult to watch the news. Sometimes I find it difficult to realize what people are actually capable of doing. My condolences to the families affected by this tradegy.
I comprehend yet, I understand nothing at all.
::sighs::
Well tonight I spent some time at the Beatriz Ball, Ball. lol. As if I needed to spend anymore time with my co-workers. I feel like my job can so have our very own version of The Office. Dang, I can't believe I've been working there over a year. Eff the cliches and all, but it does feel like just yesterday I began. It's cool, I bitch, but I actually enjoy my job more than I'll allow them to know. Shhhh and you don't tell em either.
I was involved in a conversation between two older married women. Woman B says to Lady A "Look at your husband. Isn't he the most handsome thing in the room?" I laughed because Lady A's husband was talking to Woman B's husband. But then Lady A says to us, "You know, I just don't even see that anymore. I only see the things that bothers me about him"...Wow. Reality check huh?
That disturbs me on so many levels that a wife is unable to look at her husband and feel the fire that began the journey of "til death do us part." I don't know. Sometimes I really feel that I have this fairy tale vision of love and marriage that aren't felt by the masses. I know right now I'm in my "naw, I'm cool, I just wanna be alone" rut, but i put that on katrina. I finally have an apartment to myself again, I'm having "private parties" ((c) india arie) everyday! ya heard!
But shit, I've experienced relationships. The best relationship advice I ever received was, "That 50%/50% stuff is just bullshit. See, sometimes you gotta be 80% when that other person can only be 20, and vice versa. But if you constantly find yourself in the same equation...you need to remove yourself from that problem"
No one's saying that its gonna be all good all of the time, or even most of the time. But dang, If I can't look at you, and know why we're still together, maybe we should begin that conversation that starts with, "we need to talk" and ends with "well, eff you then, I never liked your..." hahhahaha I'm just playin lmao.
So, future husband. I want to wake up in the morning, not really in your arms...cause i like my space when i sleep (well, maybe you'll change that, lol) but to turn over and look at you and lovesmile. I want to be at work and hear a word, that sounds like your name (but really doesn't) and lovesmile. I want to be in the grocery store and pass an ingrediant that's in your favorite food and lovesmile. I want to read an installation guide to my new computer program and play 7 degrees of seperation until it involves you and lovesmile. I want to come home and have a converstation with you about everything and absolutly nothing at all and lovesmile. I want to go back and read this blog after we've found each other, take a picture and post so you can see what the lovesmile truly is.

it started off with me having to work late last week. I needed to vibe to something but the regulars on the ipod weren't hittin it
so i started with a little pop rock in the Goo Goo Dolls "and i don't want the world to see me, cause i don't think they'd understand. when everything’s made to be broken, i just want you to know who I am"
don't ask me why, but that lead me to bump the celine dion "let's talk about love" cd. classic. i remember being in a hotel for one of those hurricanes driving my moms and my aunt crazy with that joint "tell him that the sun and moon rise in his eyes, reach out to him. and whisper, tender words so soft and sweet. i'll hold him close to feel his heart beat. love will be the gift u give yourself"
yeah and by that time my g.m. was raggin on me, so u know i had to go to the r&b vault...well not really vault...let's say r&b piggy bank
"Now it may be cold on the east coast, but on the other side of town...it never rains" now i think i heard Al Roker challenge this on the Today show this morning
Then i had to bring it back to the days long before the ipods and cds and even purchasing cassette tapes...yes pirating at its best...taping joints straight from the radio. waiting for that special song to be on your "hot 8 at 8" or whatever it was in your city and pressing that pause button to let your song record.....AHHHhhhhh Shit naw
"And I'll be thinking bout you
Every night and everyday
Cause in my heart I know
That I never should've let you go
And my love for you is stronger than I ever knew
But I couldn't tell you so
That I never should've let you go
Is there someone else,
standing where I stood
Giving you the love you never got from me
Girl I would give you the world
if I only could
Girl you will see
Will you come back to me
Won't you come back to me"
but u know what...naw ima let them tell u why...
just remembering
I fell like that Superwoman Stevie was singing about
very well
but the fact is...
I need You

in my search of wanting to move to nyc i started looking at schools in the area who offer ma or phd programs in sociology...no for real...i think i really wanna live there. maybe i can get an intern there or something. i really do heart ny!
i was just reading a recommendation letter from one of my former professors and that was a real confidence booster

i think my boss is being a lil mean to me cause everyone is saying i'm her favorite...do i care...yeah! fuck ya'll for saying that, cause now she is pissy with me...but oh, it won't last long...not long at all!!!!
why is it that everytime i take a mini vacation i still feel like i'm at work???? I promise..I am NOT answering my phone this time!!!
i'm not as excited as i was about john legends new joint. i mean ima buy it and all but...idontknow. well, i wasn't actually too fond of "i used to love u" when that came out either so we'll see
somebody around my house is hating on me cause i can't pick up not 1 wireless signal...mean people eat spinach and suck

Part I
Damn, almost a year since my life has taken a turn in a direction, I never imagined possible...but isn't that life? Not in a sarcastic way, but on the real.
Drawing closer to the 1 year aftermath of Katrina, broken levees, and an effed up government response, I would like to take this time to remember.
August 23, 2005
Graduation, two weeks in Puerto Rico, a new job, free time…now this is the life!!!!! I still need to pass by UNO to get some paperwork and maybe pass by Rachel’s office to holla at her; I’ll just leave work early today and handle all of this.
Damn, I forgot to call Marissa to see how she made out on her first day at FAMU. “Girl, ya’ll better watch out. I heard they have a hurricane that’s suppose to hit Florida…and you thought you were running away from evacuating, lol…oh there’s Rachel, let me call u back”
August 26, 2005
“So the anniversary reception and Vicki’s baby shower is this weekend. I just need to get one last gift and I’m straight. Ma, I’ma stay at your house this weekend. Hey, what’s up with that hurricane, now they saying it might come our way. Do you wanna evacuate? Aright then, I’ma be by your house tomorrow.”
August 27, 2005
Why is my cell phone acting up? I have to call people 7 times before it goes through. Well the anniversary party is rescheduled because of the hurricane, but I don’t know many people who are evacuating. Man, I really feel like some BBQ shrimp. I’ma go to Cheesecake Bistro ya’ll want anything.
No really, what the hell is wrong with my phone? I get to “the bistro” and I’m mean mugging this girl but I don’t know why. Oh shit!!! That’s the girl Common pulled on stage at the concert…yeah I’m hating but so what…
I get back to moms house and take a nap that turns into my mom waking me up in the morning with a frantic “Go get your grandma cause we leaving”
August 28, 2005
I think of passing by my apartment but I already over packed for the night I spent at my mom’s house; plus I knew we wouldn’t be gone that long. Before picking up my grandma I went to the gas station to fill up my tank. The gas station was more crowded than the parking lot after the club. It took forever to get to a pump and when I did it took 20 minutes to fill the tank, because of how slow the gas was pumping. On the opposite gas tank from mines was this real thugged out dude…gold teeth, blunt in his ear, wife beater, g-nikes…u know. We began talking bout the whole situation and he said, “this gonna be the big one. You know how I know? (Closes his eyes while inhaling then exhaling slowly) Cause you can smell it in the air” I chuckled cause I know he was dead serious, he chuckled cause he knew I thought he was loaded. As my pump finally finished I threw up the deuce and told him to be careful.
Grandma was already ready, she had a little bag of clothes and her little safe box. We made it back to my mom’s house and her ex-husband was there and said he was gonna follow us. We loaded up her truck and I parked my car on the sidewalk by her house…but it never floods over there so my car would be safe.
We decided to go east because EVERYONE was going to Houston. The phones were still acting up but you could still call and receive calls after a couple of tries. Conversations usually went “Oh, ya’ll decided to leave too huh? Yeah, once my mom saw how big it was she was ready to go. Naw, we probably be back on Tuesday, after it passes”
The traffic was okay and the weather was real nice. We drove with the window down most of the time. Wow, people are taking all their pets with them, cages were on the back of every other truck. Damn, we’ve been driving for 9 hours…are we there yet?
At every gas stop, gas seemed to double in price…but those were the stations that had gas available. We made it to Montgomery, and that was cool cause they had some Civil Rights spots I wanted to see. But there was no room at the inn. We used a phone book to call other hotels and they were all booked up, so we had to keep driving.
I don’t remember what time it was but we made it to Lagrange, GA, and were able to get some rooms. After confirming that my cousins had finally made it to Houston I took a shower and headed straight for the bed.
August 29, 2005
Not even worrying about the storm I made it to the lobby for a continental breakfast and a daily check of my emails.
A blank draws as I can’t remember anything that happened during this time and hearing that the levees had breeched.
August 30, 2005
Nothing prepared me for what was to come next. I turn on the television to find still pictures of New Orleans flooding. I didn’t think for a moment that my apartment was flooded, after all, stuff like that happens to other people…not me.
Still pictures turned into live coverage. It was all surreal. The images of New Orleans were identical with Iraq. People stranded. Streets in which I grew up on were unfamiliar. That wasn’t my city on this broadcast. A mix of emotions ran throughout my head.
I took my laptop and went to the lobby to find whatever I could find on the internet. Thousands of pictures weren’t enough to convince me that this had happened to New Orleans.
I then saw one picture that made the nightmare a reality. My apartment was behind a strip mall and on the corner was a Shell station. All I could see of that station was the top of the shell that stood about 15 feet high. I cried. I knew that I could no longer deny that Katrina had no direct impact on my life. Looking back on it, it was so selfish of me to cry tears over materialistic losses when I still had my life.
The days after this were chaotic. Calls to cell phones with Louisiana numbers were almost impossible to reach. We began to hear news of looting, murder, rape…basically hell on earth in New Orleans. It wasn’t uncommon to see someone walking in a daze…everything was uncertain.
September 2, 2005
It’s time to go where family is and that’s Houston. All major parts of I-10 east and west were closed so we took every back road from Lagrange, GA to Houston, TX. I saw watermelon patches and cotton fields, which made me a little uneasy because it was almost dark.
September 3, 2005
It took us two days to get to Houston and yet this would only be the beginning of our journey.
Drawing closer to the 1 year aftermath of Katrina, broken levees, and an effed up government response, I would like to take this time to remember.

stop trying to understand and just help
Being Black in America is a unique experience
Your vantage point doesn't allow you the capacity to comprehend this
In other words:
Don’t start off any sentence with "as a black person in new Orleans, la, usa, do u think/feel...?" etc
Fuck yeah racism exists...how dare u mutter that question to me
Yeah I blame the gov't (local, state, federal) for the thousands of deaths of Katrina (invincible as corps built damn near invisible levees)
and no Katrina didn't play the race card, but due to shit like redlining, residential segregation and other forms of institutionalized racism, Blacks and the poor (who just so happened to be majority Black) in New Orleans were inevitability handed the short end of the stick.

Dang, i love this joint
Good morning silence
Good morning to myself
Good morning to the pain in the center of my chest
It's crazy how much I miss
a simple good morning kiss
Good morning independence or is it loneliness?
I know I said I wanted this but I have regrets
I pray for God's will to be done
The very next day you were gone
Good morning to the harsh realities of life
and good morning to the fact we're not husband and wife
We made a promise to stay
But destiny got in the way
Good morning acceptance
Good morning inner strength
I'm loving every moment
even the strain
It's crazy how much I miss
a simple good morning kiss
It's crazy how much I've missed
Now it's time for me to live
Good morning optimism
Good morning to my faith
Good morning to the beginning of a brand new day
I know that God's will be done
So I lay down my pain and I'm moving on
I know that God's will be done.
So it's a good morning after all
Good morning to myself
Good morning to the pain in the center of my chest
It's crazy how much I miss
a simple good morning kiss
Good morning independence or is it loneliness?
I know I said I wanted this but I have regrets
I pray for God's will to be done

memoirs of a-lisa lmao
damn I just wrote a whole blog and I did something to make it disappear...sort of a blog copperfield.
well, i'm back from nyc and that was my best trip in a minute. a few thoughts of my trip
-public transportation is a beast!!!! and the subways rock!!! I was all, "ima catch the shuttle from grand central to times square and catch the 1 downtown" lmao cause you couldn't catch me on rita (rta) in New Orleans, but with gas prices at $3.43 (my gosh what a humbling experience, an i'm complaining about $2.87 ::smirk::) I’d be a train hopper too.
-New Yorkers are sooo cool. Everyone we met was ridiculously cool. Shot out to Muhammad...thanks for entertaining us between our missed taxis, wrong taxis and just plain getting lost...and I know u made us miss one of them on purpose.

-everybody in new york is a hustla.
period.
-gosh the weather was great this weekend!!!!
-times square and china town remind me of new orleans...no really!!!
After a night of dinner with my coworkers I decided to walk to my hotel instead of catching a cab. I decided to take 5th ave to 42nd and then just walk down to 2nd...lol I think im sooo cool!!! I forgot that rockefeller center was on 5th so I made a detour to peep the nbc studios and a tour of the building. While taking pics this security guard asks me if I got some good pics. Now i'm not even gonna lie but dude caught me off guard so I was all "naw" cause I did't know him like that. So then he asked me where I was from, and I told him new orleans. He told me that was interesting and that he was taking a break and wanted to talk to me. I was put off by him just by the fact that I didn't know him, I was by myself and it was kinda late. So I was all, "naw that's alright, I need to make it home" In between those words I think something was lost in translation. I walked away and he followed me yelling for me to hold on. I stopped and he told me he was from Africa, and he was a student at Columbia pursuing a masters in International studies and when I told him I was from new orleans he connected that with katrina and wanted to talk to me about that. but then he went on and told me that it was okay that I didn't want to talk to him, he attributed it to my assimilation to american individualistic culture. He told me that although I might not have wanted to talk to him about this he still had to pursue it and because I didn't help, that gave way for him to ask somebody else. I stood and listened and mentally agreed with what dude was saying, but it was late and I was by myself and still had a lil ways to go before I got home.
Sorry
while out yesterday I forgot to put sunscreen lotion on...or maybe I didn't bring it with me because I could only pack the essentials since I had to put my carry on items in with my luggage...so to make a long story short im a lil sunburned. uhhh it sucks cause my bottom lip is a lil burnt too...ughhhh gross
im sure more things happened on my trip but im just to tired to think, YES!!!! I feel sleep coming on.

So....u just glue it in??

You can either walk this way and get my cheesecake, or walk THAT WAY and go home...lmao at da band

"linen shorts so my balls don't get hot" lol

well, i'm back from nyc and that was my best trip in a minute. a few thoughts of my trip

-times square and china town remind me of new orleans...no really!!!

damn all my tazo is gone ;-(
Wow, India.Arie is the ish!!!!!! She had a concert at the hob on Monday. Other than standing on my feet for a mere 5 hours....it was great!!!!
No for real that girl is soooo dope. I swear she sang every song she's ever recorded. You ever had that song, that you never really listened to on the cd, but after seeing the artist perform it live, the next day that's your favorite song? Ex. Jill Scott "Not Like Crazy" & “no umbrella, no jacket…just warm”…nasty Jill, Common "Be" (well not really but i understood "we got arms but won't reach for the sky" better). India has done this in "I Choose"...the girl said "I even had a talk with my mama and I told her the day I'm grown" LMAO, but on the real the whole song is dope.
let's see...
i'm leaving for nyc friday and i haven't unpacked from 4th of july weekend nor this past weekend...how bout i choose to get my home life organized.
my lil cuz is leavin me "a quick pumper" LMAO cause i know u readin this
my other lil big cuz is coming back
by the way moving sucks...in the words of denzel in out of time "I WISH I HAD MORE TIME!!!!"
24 hours in a day doesn't seem long enough anymore. I remember the days where I could and would waste the time away doing absolutely
nothing.
those days were called high school...and some of college.
I wish i could go back to a time less complicated...naw, i really don't
I heart dvr, although i think it will play a part in my demise.
how come every season of celebrity fit club has a cast member from The Sopranos? hahahaha big pussy
This weekend i heard someone say that teaching is becoming a job for the unemployable.
I kinda agree with this. Before Katrina, Louisiana took over 13 schools in New Orleans because they were “failing schools”. School in Orleans parish started Monday, only a handful of these state charter schools were able to reopen. Classes are full, certified teachers are scarce...uncertified teachers need jobs...Alas the cycle of a failing school system is almost in tact again...pretty soon we will have our pipeline to prison and the hospitality industry (i.e. housekeeping & janitorial staff) back in order, as if Katrina never took place.
and im out

i got down to "the heart of the matter"
so the day finally came
the one where some one asked me about you
not just you
but me & u
i practiced this moment in my mind
times and times over
but like project runway...my execution sucked (hahaha...my bad...sorry)
i learned a lot about myself that day
the truth sometimes hurts
but that hurt turned into self love
and that love could’ve never manifested
with u
with me

I ain't hatin but.....
ya'll gotta stop...for real!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
myspace has allowed many people, some of who I know personally to create an image of themselves that isn't consistent with reality.
YOU ARE NOT A GANGSTA NOR A GANGSTA RAPPER if....
you went to a private/parochial high school
you grew up in the subdivisions of New Orleans
you went to church with me and participated in such organizations as the drill team, youth choir, etc
your parents are balling legally
I'm sorry...YOU ARE NOT A GANGSTA...try something else like...
making something out of yourself, oh i guess that's what ur trying to do
but i'm sorry this isn't working
i ain't trying to call myself no gangsta, but TRUST i can go toe to toe with some of the best of em...TRUST
rid yourself of that "new new" mentality :::see ATL for clarity:::
you think all gangstas wanna be gangstas????? probably not. given an equal chance at opportunities you were born with, they would probably want your lifestyle and all ur cultural capital.
Lol and u probably wondering why you can only get as far as public access and myspace will take u huh??????

black people love gangstalicious the way fat women love oprah lol
I freakin heart frankie b. and maze!!!!!!!!!!! it's just something about their music that is so familiar to me....freakin timeless..."that's the golden time of day!!!!"
damn, lately i have let work consume every possible minute of my day. shit even when I’m not there, I’m there. shit's gonna be weird once i start school again...or will it?
damn, it seems as if i just graduated. but naw, I’m a long way from working two jobs and being a full time student. Now...Everyday I'm hustlin...hustle real hard...i love that song, esp. hov's verse "Who u haters think u talkin to, I'm the fuckin boss!" oh snap i forgot to give my disclaimer at the beginning of this blog so i'll give it now. The name of the blog ur reading is "I'm Major" by Elisamk. so again...."Who u haters think u talkin to, I'm the fuckin boss!" damn i feel that dude when he says that
speakin of hov i've been listening to that PSA on the black album on repeat lately and just realized how dope that song really is "No matter where you go, you are what you are player And you can try to change but that's just the top layer Man, you was who you was 'fore you got here"
ridiculous
gosh i love music. I’m not bout to be on some "yeah man i just throw on some headphones to tune out and escape the world" type shit.
shit, that's disrespectful to the art; I’m on some ole "music is a part of my life, just as vital as my moms and dad's conception of me" type shit.
i love to hear a song that just takes me back. makes me sit back and think of...life. ohhh and i love to hear a song that i've heard a million times over and hear something i've never heard before or when I’m able to relate to some ish....gosh "green eyes" damn silly "e" badu is just dope. gosh i wish i could find the words to describe how incredibly talented this lady truly is...well i guess i have huh? Not really.
lol remember donell jones' "where i wanna be" cd...yeah that joint was hot but i hated when that single came out and all the dudes were all like "yeah man that's how i feel too, that's where i wanna be" awwww shut the eff up. that ish came out at the same time as toni braxton's "just be a man about it" and the girls was like "yeah nicca, just be a man about ur ish" awwww shut the eff up...nothing worse than a cop out song, and those were the ones for 2000
so while at essence, we went to the monique seminar and i walked in with more admiration for this woman than when i walked out. so monique came out and did her lil bit on Essence and her love for black women and how we should respect ourselves...ya know, the whole spill. But then she started to talk about her open marriage. Okay so I had been aware of her relationship by the interview she had with Jill Scott (I heart Jilly from PhillY) in the previous issue of Essence, but I wasn’t ready for the bullshit that was coming out of her mouth. Basically, the talk went like this “I love my husband, he’s my best friend, I find other men attractive, he finds other women attractive, we can have sex with other people and it’s cool because were are honest with each other, we tell each other everything” WTF?!?!?!?!?!??!?!??!? Really????? As long as I can remember I have heard the statement “men are gonna be men” what the fuck does that mean???? That I should accept a nicca that will lie to me just cause he couldn’t control his hormones, or maybe he didn’t tell me cause he didn’t want to “hurt me” or maybe he did tell me and I should forgive him cause he’s a man and “that’s what men do” UHHH NAAAAWWWWW I can’t accept this shit, this lame ass excuse that we have trained ourselves to accept. I cannot accept dishonesty.
Period.
Nor can I accept this “open marriage” bullshit. Matter of fact; don’t even use the word marriage in this justification of lack of self love, respect and trust. Why even get married???? No, really…why even get married if you want and open relationship? Don’t try to alter an institution based on what is convenient for your lifestyle. That’s not what it’s about.
I’ve been cheated on…it’s not a good look. I will not tolerate it. There’s too much shit out here these days to be bullshitting around…don’t know what I’m referring to…4 letters, small word, life sentence....a.i.d.s, there are many more consequences, holla at me if you need a list.
I was so thrown off by the audience response to Monique’s seminar…roaring applause from women and men of all ages. Was this shit really happening? Was I really in a room of people who were willing subject themselves to random diseases and blatant lies all for a little pussy/dick for a night?
Damn. We got a long way to go.
Other than that essence…sucked…well not big time but it needs to come back to n.o. I don’t know if ya’ll know but Mary J is so effin lady. Her performance was phenomenal.
Runner up….The Hip-hop pioneers: Doug E. Fresh, Slick Rick, WHodini, MC Lyte, Sugar Hill Gang, etc.
Oh and Bobby Brown’s ass is straight CRAZY, so he was humping the stage, saying the first thing that came to his mind and freakin stretched out Tenderoni 30 minutes, then after leaving the stage his background singers started to sing “my prerogative” so as b.brown is coming back onstage, Essence is like uhhh huuhh nicca we pullin da curtains. So this fool comes through the curtain. So essence is like “no this nicca didn’t” so they cut his background mics, the music and then his mic…good show bobby, I’m sure your invitation for next year is in the mail as we speak.
So uhhh it’s really past my bedtime but boondocks is on so I gotta throw the deuces.
Oh ima be in the nyc next month so if there is anything u think i should see holla at a comment!

maybe i was wrong
So I was one of the people hating on "the breakup." I guess I was looking for a "wedding crashers" Vince Vaughn and a .....well, ima plead the fif on Jennifer Aniston.
life has taught me that sometimes...well...shit just don't always work out (wow, I can believe "heart of the matter" is playing as I write this...fun-ny) not trying to say that love at first sight is unattainable, or that love actually does work out...but I understand the alternative. gosh I feel like I’ve said this recently:::smile::: upon hearing john legend's "get lifted" for the first time I automatically knew "ordinary people" was going to be a hit, but I loved it for the obvious reasons...the lyrics "we're just ordinary people" I feel like so often we fall in love with these fairy tale stories of love that we lose sight of what love actually is. And once struggle and hard work in a relationship comes along we don't know how to cope because "they" always live happily ever after.
wait where was I....oh "the breakup" yeah so, it was a good movie after all. I was so caught up in wanting things to work out for the better, in which I equated “good ending” with them getting back together, that I totally lost the whole meaning in the movie. They both hindered each other from growth, in the relationship as well as individuals. And it was a “happy ending” both of the characters were able to develop their own self without the selfish limitations they had placed on each other. The breakup also allowed each of them to see their own “ugly self” yeah, Vince was a likeable guy, but dude was an asshole when he didn’t get his way and Jennifer had that “I’m not going to say it, because you are suppose to know it even though I never told you anyway” mentality.
This movie allowed growth to take place instead of happily ever after, which in turn gave fate a way to intervene once both were able to establish a healthier self apart from on another.
So we have the national guard patrolling our city. Yeah so ima leave that one for conversations for the sake of incriminating myself. FIF!!!!!!
Have you heard Field Mob’s latest “Light Poles and Pine Trees”?????
Dope.
People have been sleepin on them but I remember the first time I heard “All I know” dopeness, and I don’t care what nobody says…them dudes is on point. My favorite song on the new joint is “blacker the berry” I’m all about the self love, shout out to pac
Speaking of Pac, I was listening to Makaveli the don killuminati the 7 day theory cd…well itunes the other day and I forgot how dope this dude really was so then I brought the Me against the world tunes and it just brought me back. Now I’m not even going to go into the pac/biggie thing, or that this dude was a genius and the best rapper. But dude was dope. At 13/14 I could relate to every one of those songs on Me against the world, from “death around the corner” cause I really still remember that ish “I know whats wrong with that crazy mutha fucker, he just stand by that got damn window with that fuckin a-k all day, he don’t work, he don’t fuck, he don’t do a gotdamn thing”…wow, where was my mom’s when I was listening to all thing???? Lmao. Naw but EVERY song on that joint was hot! OMG “Outlaw” was my ish…okay so I’m listening to my ipod now.
Naw, but I really feel sorry for these kids nowadays with this snap rap bullish. Haha you really thought The Black Album was Jigga’s dopest cd???? Check out Reasonable Doubt…better yet, check out that In My lifetime Vol. 1….sorry I had to blog the whole second verse…and I’m out:
“I'm from the place where the chruch is the flakiest
And niggas is praying to god so long that they Atheist
Where you can't put your vest away and say you'll wear it
tomorrow
Cause the day after we'll be saying, damn I was just with him
yesterday
I'm a block away from hell, not enough shots away from straight
shells
An ounce away from a triple beam still using a hand-held weight
scale
Your laughing, you know the place well
Where the Liqour Store's and the base well
And Government, fuck Government, niggas polotic themselves
Where we call the cops the A-Team
cause they hop out of vans and spray things
And life expectancy so low we making out wills at
eight-teen
Where how you get rid of guys who step out of line, your rep
solidifies
So tell me when I rap you think I give a fuck who
criticize?
If the shit is lies, god strike me
And I got a question, are you forgiving guys who live just like me?
We'll never know
One day I pray to you and said if I ever blow, Let 'em know
Mistakes ain't exactly what takes place in the ghetto
Promise fulfilled, but still I feel my job ain't done
Cough up a lung, where I'm from, Marcy son, ain't nothing nice

untitled 1
what the hell is up with the links on the side of my page????? oh well.
I think giving some people the benefit of the doubt is sometimes a way you set yourself up?
I used to think that all people eventually grew out of childish behavior, cattyness, just that dumb high school shit you look back on and wonder how you could be so petty. some people never pass this phase...in their lifetime.
I'm not one of those people...but don't make me remind you where i'm from!
sorry blog family...just gots some ish on my mind
damn, how many times does law & and order come on????? no really?????
and for the people who wonder what's going on in New Orleans almost a year after Katrina...Legalized price gouging...this shit is ridiculous.
People, if you're going to stay in New Orleans...HAVE A PLAN. I don't only mean for hurricane season. Shit, do something with your life. There's a lot of blaming to do for the condition of institutions in New Orleans pre and post Katrina but there is also a certain amount of personal responsibiliy that we have to be accountable for...myself included. Go to a Common Ground meeting, log on to nolafugees.com website. An individualistic approach isn't going to help rebuild New Orleans. It will take a community. Nobody said this will be easy, shit, i know i face roadblocks everyday...but a New orleans for all is an attainable goal. I SEE IT!!!!!!
but on some other ish....so when is the finale of Run's house gonna air?????? cause he's having a season premier, i just didn't know the last season was over?????
oh wow, making the band is back!!!!! well it aint fred, babs, dylan, choppa, sara "ain't hip hop", ness but it'll due
d-a-b-a-n-ddddddddddddddd!!!!!!!!!!!

let's see
Meetings have sucked every piece of life out of me. Today I had a pre-mtg., a mtg that lasted 2 hours and a post-meeting and a follow up email that cc'd everyone in the mtg.
:::exhale::: and hump day is ova!
I’ve been making some grownasswoman decisions lately...the housewarming is soon...to be continued...
Gosh, I feel like my life consists of the drama of the workplace and that's where it ends. I’m like the invisible (wo)man...shot out r. ellison, from the hours of 5pm-7am. Nothing seems worth writing.
lets see...yesterday I bought dave chapelle's block party and watched that ish twice...cause it was just that dope...jill scott is the ish.
period
sometimes I hate kweli's voice live. I know he's hype and all but it's just hard to understand.
but other than that I respect that concert. watching it makes me feel refreshed, I can see that the artists are REALLY friends, and its not that let me act cool while the cameras are on. I love when jill scott gives erykah badu her props but recognizes her own "queendom" (c) jill scott.
so usher came to new orleans to help huh????

I left 3 days ago, but no one seems to know I’m gone
So it might not be such a bad idea, if I never went home again…I know it’s past visiting hours:::pauses ipeezy:::
okay after rethinking my previous post about the season finale of the sopranos, yeah i can agree with you cuz. it's the calm before the storm...but uhhhh who wants to wait until....to find out???
so i went to the roots/kweli concert last night and it was tight. i think the club was too big though. i enjoy the smaller more intimate venues like the hob. uhhhh i wish someone has a concert there so i don't have to drive all the way to Houston...well that’s only for 2 more months.
i was supposed to go back to New Orleans today but i decided to spend another day down here. i just wanted to enjoy the relaxation. i haven't even checked my work email (that's a good feeling to have until Tuesday morning when i have over 100 new msgs....and i am not exaggerating, nor will that number include junk emails)
ahhh so i saw the da Vinci code. it was okay. i didn't read the book. don't really wanna. but it was a decent movie.
i saw mike's blog about the breakup...lmao i need to go see that within the next week or i will never go
wow. went to the breakfast klub in houston. so on point. katfish and grits (don't knock it til u try it) it was sooooooooooooo on point. it was so funny cause kweli was free styling about the breakfast klub
"i am not my hair" but i got the baddest* haircut and color i have ever gotten in my entire life
*and by bad i mean hella good
i think i was brainwashed by the waiter at houstons. i feel like i always order fruit punch at houston's to drink. so when i ordered it this time the waiter was all like "uhhh we don't serve fruit punch but i can mix some orange & cranberry juice" so i was all like "really??? ya'll have never served fruit punch?" and he was all like "naw but do you want some water with lemon" and i was all like "we'll maybe i do want water with lemon" then my cuz just told him to mix the fruit punch.
it was muy Buena (lol at mike’s blog)

My…I need to stop and catch a breath while giving Chidi an update blog…lmao
So I’m walking down Magazine st. and I see a man walking two miniature ponies…lol…just kidding…oh no this is a true story but since I have been carrying my camera everywhere I have not seen this man since…so you’ll just have to believe me…lol
I’m really gonna miss Katie Couric. The Today Show is apart of my morning ritual.
Wake up at 6:45, but somebody’s ALWAYS in the bathroom so I continue to lie down and watch the news, just in time to catch the forecast of the day. Then at 7:00 that theme music comes on and even though I know I’m suppose to be getting ready for work, I am always suckered into enjoying a conversation with Kate and Matt.
Well sorry Matt, Al and Ann. No more Today Show. Tomorrow it will be Good Morning America. It’s not u.
It’s that damn Meredith. I just don’t like her.
Anyways…what’s been really hood?
I took my GRE and found out I’m average….AVERAGE I tell ya!!!! LOL, good thing I have my grades to compensate for my scores…cause I’m a bomb azz sociology student!!! What!!! Ask my professors…lmao
Thanks Chidi, for introducing me to that New York Shit!!!! But I love the Kweli/J. Grae version. Jean is so dope, the whole song is cold but I was a little affected when she says,”gotta give back to the city I’m a factor of” I’ve been thinking how much of a disservice it would be to my city if I didn’t dedicate my research towards home...what obviously sprung to mind was a project which follows a particular neighborhood community rebuilding effort..who comes back and why (the variables at work here), how decisions are made, interface with city,
state, federal plans and agencies ..a before and after profile of a community.
Just a few thoughts
Anyways…I’m leaving for Houston tomorrow to check out kweli and the roots…its no radio city music hall but it’ll due
No really, did ya’ll see the Today Show this morning when they did a 15 year in review of a lot of the top stories Katie has covered.
Sobbing before work. Hard. Ugly crying.
Damn.

Damn.
